The following letter is provided by Gary
Cobb, a 1957/1958 Alumni. Gary and his wife, Margaret (Skaggs), class of
1961, have an annual picnic for the Classes of 1952 thru 1962. Gary will
be giving us updates to the alumni from these classes, and information
on their annual picnic.
We welcome other alumni to do the same for their classes. If any
other alumni would like to have a "spot" on the CHS Web site, please
contact one of the Alumni Committee.
For those of you that graduated within these years (or anybody else), watch for Gary
Cobb's updates!
Very
informative and lots of laughs too!! |
Note from Gary Cobb:
I plan to profile a few students every couple of months or so, if you
would like classmates to know more about you or a fellow classmate
please contact me. If you have news of any classmates, good or sad, let
me know. Also if you think someone not on-line would enjoy receiving
this newsletter please print it out and send it along.
If you need to find a classmate contact one of the CHS Alumni
Committee listed on this web site. They would also appreciate any
updates of addresses, etc. There is a list on this site, of classmates,
where contact information is missing and in some cases a classmates name
is entirely missing from the rolls. Help if you can. Until next time,
good health, love, peace and light,
Gary Cobb (57-58)

Not all the news
but just the news that passes through my computer and phone line. I'm sure
there is much more any one of you could tell me that would be interesting to
the group. But - I don't HEAR FROM YOU! I've added a year to our combined
group (1962) to make it an even ten years of classes. Thanks to the
alumni committee for posting this newsletter on the CHS website

Ron Wilcox (58) has requested the whereabouts of fellow classmates
now reportedly living in Florida, those being: Carol Burke, Pat
Fannin, and Carol Becker-Shaw. Ron is now in PA and will be
traveling down the eastern part of the country to Florida. If you
know how to contact any of these classmates please let me know and
I'll pass it along to Ron. Ron and wife Carol will be hooking up
with Dickie Siebert and wife in Florida. Ron and Carol have been
RVing for several years now and Dickie will soon be full time - I
think that's correct. There are a number of Cahokia classmates who
travel the country full time in large RVs. Ken "Al" Van Meter and
wife Esther are an example. Al is President of Illinois Winnebago
owners and will lead a Northeast Winnebago sponsored tour next
fall. If you have would like information on RVing I can put you in
touch with either Ron or Al. (Ron's
cell phone number is 1-866-221-7769).

Re: Little Milton: Some of us remember "Little Milton"
the blues giant whose band often played the Aloha in Cahokia
when classmate Doyle Breeze operated the club. Little Milton,
who was just hospitalized with a severe stroke (see below) may
have been the biggest recording artist to have ever played a
Cahokia venue. Years ago, The Red Carpet brought in some better
known acts but I don't think any equaled Little Milton. Sauget,
IL doesn't count. Does anyone remember the name of
the club on Rt. 3 in Dupo that once hosted Chuck Berry and his
band? And do you know the name of the Cahokian who ran the club?
LITTLE MILTON CAMPBELL
HOSPITALIZED -ALABAMA
Blues great "Little
Milton" Campbell was hospitalized following a series of strokes
on Thursday, and is currently in ICU, this according to promoter
and friend Debbie Dixon. "He hasn't opened his eyes in a couple
of days," she said. Details and updates will be posted as they
come in.
As a "young 'n" in
Inverness Mississippi, he was influenced by T-Bone Walker, B. B.
King, Roy Brown and Big Joe Turner. His earliest recordings were
on Sam Philips' Sun label, backed by Ike Turner's band.
In 1958, he moved to St. Louis & with
Oliver Sain started the Bobbin label, famous for signing Albert
King. In 1961, he signed with Chess' subsidiary, Checker.
There, over a nine year span, he cut over a hundred sides;
amongst these, several made it to the top ten on the national
R&B charts, including the number one Who's Cheating Who?.
In 1971 he signed on at Stax, where he built a fuller sound,
recording with additional strings, the Memphis Horns, "Big" Joe
Turner, and Willie "Too Big" Hall.
